Voorwoord

Elke dag gebeurt er van alles op straat en daar zitten bijzondere momenten tussen. Het aantrekkelijke van straatfotografie vind ik om die momenten in het alledaagse te ontdekken en met je camera te ‘vangen’. Oefenen met goed kijken en vertrouwd zijn met je camera, vergroten de kans op een mooie vangst. Het is ook handig om veel geduld te hebben, want de bijzondere momenten komen niet vanzelf naar je toe en zijn er niet de hele tijd. Soms gebeurt er weinig spannends op straat, of je ziet het te laat. Geregeld vang je niks goeds.

Maar juist dan, als alles op z’n plek valt en je thuiskomt met een geslaagde straatfoto, is de beloning extra groot.

In dit boek heb ik een selectie van straatfoto’s verzameld die ik in de afgelopen tien jaar heb genomen. Het zijn foto’s van mensen die gewoon iets ongewoons doen. De straat die ons trakteert op lekkere foto’s.

De foto’s nam ik onderweg van of naar mijn werk, op een vrije middag, speciaal voor een fotowedstrijd of op vakantie. Ik fotografeerde met een spiegelreflex, een compactcamera en vaak ook met een smartphone. Een smartphone is handig bij straatfotografie omdat je die bijna altijd bij je hebt en zo minder momenten mist. En de betere smartphones maken prima foto’s.

De straatfoto’s in dit boek zijn in kleur en onderverdeeld in rubrieken. Bij elke foto staat een korte toelichting.


Preface

Every day, the streets are lively with people which can include unique and special moments. The appealing characteristic of street photography for me is to look for, and capture the special moments with your camera. To maximise your chances, practising with your camera and being able to spot these special moments is important. Patience is a virtue, as it requires attention and energy to capture the special moments at the times they sporadically occur. Sometimes, there is nothing interesting going on or you realise you just missed an opportunity. Often, you return home empty-handed.

But the days the stars align and you arrive home with a beautiful street photo are the most rewarding.

This book contains a selection of street photos I captured in the past ten years. Photos of humans who just did something unusual, a treat given to us by the streets.

I captured the photos during my commute, on a free afternoon, specifically for a photo contest or while on vacation. To capture the photos, I used a DSLR, a compact camera and often simply a smartphone. A smartphone is convenient as you almost always carry it with you, to maximise the chances you can capture uniquely occurring moments. And high-end smartphones make photos with high quality.

The street photos in this book are all in colour and I categorised them into sections. Each photo has a short accompanying description. ×
