Community-based exercise programs are becoming increasingly important for people with Parkinson's Disease (PD). Due to limited access to specialists, patients often rely on self-care and local community programs to manage their condition. These programs offer a variety of exercises that are feasible and potentially effective. However, this thesis shows there are challenges regarding the expertise of instructors, patient referrals, research, and patient engagement. Programs need professionals with specific PD knowledge and adequate referrals to ensure safety and effectiveness. Ensuring easy access to specialized programs based on
individual needs and disease severity, and empowering people to make informed decisions about their exercise choices are also essential. Ongoing research is necessary to ensure long-term sustainability, safety, and patient enjoyment. This thesis concludes that when properly implemented and led by trained professionals, community-based programs can improve the quality of life for people with PD and serve as a valuable complement to traditional healthcare.
