My grandfather, Thomas Anderson (known as Tom) was born on 25th September 1875 at Tongue Meadows Farm, Garrigill, England. His beloved mother died when he was a young teenager and not being happy about his father’s remarriage and a stepmother in the house, he decided to leave home.

Still a teenager, Tom stowed away on a ship bound for America. On arrival, Tom was refused entry because of his age but a woman at the immigration centre, saw him and took him under her wing. She arranged for him to be employed on a ranch in Texas where he became a cowboy and an accomplished horseback rider. When he had saved enough money, Tom decided to move on and his next adventure took him to Australia. ×
